This is a photo of the original rug. I love this rug with two crossed American flags with patriotic shields surrounded by branches of oak leaves. On July 4, 1776 the U.S. Congress proclaims the Declaration of Independence from Britain, during the Revolutionary War. The flags on this rug are the flags of 1777. On June 14, 1777, the second Continental Congress passed the Flag Resolution which stated: "Resolved, That the flags of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation." The arrangement was up to the maker. On June 18, 1812, the war of 1812 began over the conflict of British violations of U.S. maritime rights.
I wonder what the meaning was to the maker of this rug? I saw this in Country Living magazine, years ago, before I started hooking. Please let me know if you have anymore information, on this outstanding rug!
